At SMJ Plumbing, I’ve seen firsthand how heavy rain and tropical storms can impact a home’s pipes and drains. Here are a few common issues to watch for.
Flooding and Sewer Backups
Heavy rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems and put extra pressure on underground pipes. This can lead to slow drains, unpleasant odors, and even sewage backups.
Tree Root Damage
Wet conditions encourage tree roots to grow, and they often find their way into sewer lines. Over time, roots can cause blockages and cracks that require repairs.
Shifting Soil and Underground Leaks
After periods of heavy rain, the ground expands and shifts. That movement can stress buried pipes and sometimes cause leaks. Soggy spots in the yard or an unexpected increase in your water bill may be signs of trouble.

Leaves and storm debris can block exterior drains, causing water to collect around your home’s foundation and create additional plumbing issues.
